The name "Buckfast" means "stronghold" — traditionally a place where deer and buck were held, and "Leigh" would have been the pasture belonging to Buckfast — hence the meaning deer held in a pasture (buck-fast-leigh).
Buckfastleigh is well known for its woollen mills and Buckfast Abbey, a Benedictine Abbey.
Buckfast Abbey is famous for its bees. The Abbey is self-supporting, with a farm where vegetables are grown and pigs and cattle kept.
